National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858)
Overview
The National Innovation visa (subclass 858) is a permanent visa for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement. It started on 7 December 2024 and replaced the Global Talent visa, which closed to new applications on 6 December 2024.
The Business Innovation and Investment Program (subclasses 188 and 888) closed permanently to new applications on 31 July 2024.
Who Can Apply?
- An internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in a profession, a sport, the arts, or academia and research, and you are still prominent in that field.
- A nomination (Form 1000) from an Australian citizen, permanent resident, eligible New Zealand citizen or Australian organisation with a national reputation in your field.
- You would be an asset to the Australian community and are able to establish yourself in Australia.
- There is no age limit, but applicants under 18 or aged 55 and over must show they would bring exceptional benefit to Australia.
How to Apply
- Expression of Interest: submit an EOI, which stays active for 2 years.
- Invitation: if invited, you have 60 days to apply. An invitation is not a pre-assessment of your application.
- Application: lodge your visa application with your nomination and evidence of your achievements.
Costs and Places
The visa application charge is from AUD6,235. Applicants aged 18 or over who don’t have Functional English pay a second instalment of AUD4,890. The 2026–27 Talent and Innovation program has 3,500 places. Figures current at September 2026. Visa charges and income thresholds usually change on 1 July each year, so always check the Department of Home Affairs website before you apply.
