Partner Visas
Overview
Partner visas let the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia. There are onshore and offshore options, as well as a Prospective Marriage visa for couples who plan to marry in Australia.
Onshore Partner Visa (Subclass 820 and 801)
- You and any family members applying with you must be in Australia when you apply.
- Your partner sponsors you. The same sponsor must support you for 2 years after the temporary 820 visa is granted.
- De facto couples usually need to have been in the relationship for 12 months before applying, unless an exception applies.
- You can’t apply if your visa has a “no further stay” condition, such as 8503, unless it has been waived first.
Offshore Partner Visa (Subclass 309 and 100)
- You must be outside Australia when you apply.
- The sponsor and relationship requirements are the same as for the onshore visa.
- Married applicants usually need to be 18 or over, and de facto applicants must be 18 or over.
Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300)
- For people outside Australia who intend to marry their Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen partner.
- You and your partner must both be 18 or over and must have met in person as adults.
- After you arrive, you marry and then apply for a Partner visa in Australia.
Evidence of Your Relationship
Strong applications show how your relationship works in practice. Most couples provide evidence of shared finances, living arrangements, how others see the relationship and your commitment to each other, with statements that explain your history together.
Costs and Processing
The visa application charge is from AUD11,710 for most applicants. Since 25 July 2026, Ministerial Direction 117 gives the highest priority to applications made in Australia for visas that can be granted in Australia. Figures current at September 2026. Visa charges and income thresholds usually change on 1 July each year, so always check the Department of Home Affairs website before you apply.
