Overview

The Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government. It lets you live, work and study anywhere in Australia and can lead to Australian citizenship. The 2026–27 Migration Program includes 35,500 state and territory nominated places.

Who Can Apply?

  • A nomination from a state or territory government agency. Each state and territory sets its own occupations and criteria.
  • An invitation to apply through SkillSelect.
  • Under 45 when you are invited.
  • At least Competent English.
  • A suitable skills assessment for your nominated occupation.
  • At least 65 points on the points test. State nomination adds 5 points.

How to Apply

  1. Get your skills assessment and English test results.
  2. Lodge an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect and apply for state or territory nomination.
  3. Once nominated and invited, lodge your visa application with supporting documents.
  4. Complete health and character checks when asked.

If the state or territory withdraws your nomination after you apply, your application becomes invalid.

Costs

The visa application charge is from AUD6,140 for the main applicant, and family members are charged extra. Figures current at September 2026. Visa charges and income thresholds usually change on 1 July each year, so always check the Department of Home Affairs website before you apply.
