Student Visa in 2026: Costs, Funds and Work Rights

Planning to study in Australia? These are the key Student visa (subclass 500) numbers to know in 2026.

A higher application charge

From 1 July 2026, the visa application charge is from AUD2,500, up from AUD2,000. Some applicants pay a lower charge, including those from ASEAN countries, Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste, and students in stand-alone ELICOS or non-award courses.

Showing you can support yourself

  • 12 months of living costs: AUD29,710 for the student, AUD10,394 for a partner and AUD4,449 for each child
  • Your first year of course fees, and school fees for school-age children
  • Travel costs of AUD2,000, or AUD3,000 if applying from West Africa

Instead, you can show your parents’ or partner’s annual income was at least AUD87,856 in the last 12 months, or AUD102,500 if family members are coming with you.

Work rights

Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session.

English tests

Tests taken at home or fully online, such as IELTS Online or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, aren’t accepted. From 21 January 2026, TOEFL iBT candidates must select “Taking TOEFL for Australia” when they register.

Student numbers

The Government set a 2026 National Planning Level of 295,000 new international student commencements. Home Affairs describes this as a way to prioritise visa processing, not a cap.
